We had our diabetic basset on Merrick for about a year but after working with a holistic DVM (because she was on a high dose of insulin twice per day), we found out that it was not the best food for her. We have now been successful in lowering her insulin to half of what she was at. We are very pleased with her progress, increased energy level and over all positive disposition.

Potatoes, rice, carrots, corn and sweet potatoes are not that low on the glycemic index. The best base food is oatmeal and then add peas or green beans into the oatmeal. We also cook up some lean ground turkey or chicken into the dish.

Once per week she is allowed to have mashed sweet potato, or chopped white potatoes but that is it. We do give her cooked rice about 2x per week.

Every morning she gets oatmeal with something added. Maybe a banana 1x per week, green beans, peas, a little chicken or even some carob chips. She loves oatmeal and carob chips.

I hope this has been of help. I have been studying it for over a year and working with our holistic DVM. Cinnamon is terrificfor diabetic dogs.

By the way, there is NO commercial dog food on the market for diabetic dogs even the stuff at the Vet's office. Plus NO diabetic treats either!

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Yes grain free is probably better. If you check out Merrick dog food they have some that are actually labeled "low glycemic".
Example:
http://www.merrickpetcare.com/store/detail.php?c=15&s=21667

And Merrick is very good super premium dog food too.
I don't feed it to my dog because I feed some other good stuff but the stuff I feed might not be for diabetic dogs.
References :
it would be a good idea(if you havent already) to take your dog to the vet and have the doc tell you what would be best for him or her, good luck!
References :
Grain free dog food. Canine and feline diabetes are caused by too many carbs found in grains. I like natures variety instinct and their raw diets. http://www.naturesvariety.com/

I also give beef ribs twice a week

EDIT: most vets will just give you a bag of crappy prescription diet which is always filled with corn. They were brought up(vet wise) with people ranting about how "good" hill's products are.
References :
Shirley's Wellness Cafe(website), months of advice from knowlegeable pet owners on YA, little big cat(website)
